There’s a slew of trendy restaurants trying to take advantage of the up-and-coming vibe in Toronto’s Junction area, but North of Bombay is not one of them. Just the opposite: brothers Amar and Gurdeep Singh brought a little culture and caché to the Junction long before it was the cool place to be. North of Bombay began as Piccadily in 1989 when a name with a British-sounding flair seemed more palatable to the local clientele. “We were the first Indian food a lot of our customers had ever tried,” Amar recalls. “At first they tried milder, sweeter dishes like the butter chicken. All these years later, they have developed their palates to include much more spice and heat.”
As the Junction continues to gentrify, many older residents move to quieter, more removed areas, however, many of them return to North of Bombay as part of their family tradition. One family who had been weekly regulars, and now live in Milton, come back every Mother’s Day and for family celebrations. For them, North of Bombay defines the neighbourhood where their family grew up.

The food is consistently delicious, but the service is unfortunately equally consistent...consistently poor. In every experience I can recount with North of Bombay (previously called Picadilli) and tonight's included, the poor quality stems not from courtesy or good intentions, but by caring about serving the customer - or, more accurately, not caring. A couple of examples: I needed to remind them (or at least I felt I needed to) of the severity of my food allergies on several occassions due to their pretty clear lack of understanding of how severe food allergies can be. Wrapping up the call I indicated that I wished to pay by VISA, and asked if they needed the number over the phone. "Don't worry about it," was the response. Clearly reading off a script without much thought into the overall process, they then proceeded to confirm the address, the anticipated delivery time, and that I was paying...in cash. When they learned (again) that I was paying by VISA, they then asked me for the card number and expiry date - all without so much as a hint of recognition of my inquiry about the credit card number only seconds ago. So to the owners I say, keep up the great work in the kitchen, but please try to convey to staff the importance of the customer, that customers' experiences with the restaurant's people are as important as their experience with its food. amd that customers need to feel their needs are met with at least some level of care.
Quite simply the most delicious Indian food in Toronto is served at this restaurant. Top food quality is their motto. Friendly management and nice relaxing atmosphere. In business since 1989, these guys have been cooking there original recipes. You can even have the food delivered if you're in the area. But I recommend going to the restaurant and enjoying the food right when it's made. You won't be disappointed.
Food is always great, atmosphere is beautiful and I can't compain about the service.
We have been eating here at least twice a month for over five years now. It is hands down one of the best Indians restaurants in Toronto. We have eaten in and had take out. Both are awesome.
Hands down our fave Indian resto downtown. Sublime food made with lots of love at ridiculously low prices served in a proper yet casual setting. Also N of B will deliver to you if you're lucky enough to be in their delivery area. Almost seems too good to be true!
