When Oliver Hodo became the new owner of Loons Restaurant & Pub in April of 2014, he immediately took steps — five of them, to be exact — to build on the establishment’s strengths.

Step 1: Soup up the screens. Loons has been a sports bar since it opened in 2001, but compared with local rivals, its wall-mounted TVs were small, few and far between, Oliver says. So he added five new screens, both inside the tavern and out on the spectacular back patio, which lacked TVs before. “In summer, everybody is outside,” Oliver explains. “I want the sports bar image to be consistent.”

This has yielded one of the finest outdoor sports-watching venues in Toronto. The 2014 World Cup of soccer, for instance, was a “huge success,” Oliver says. “People were so eager to sit outside and watch the games.”

Step 2: Pump up the patio. Loons is home to the largest outdoor patio in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood, a 95-seat backyard expanse sheltered by towering maples that has always been popular. But the space was underused, Oliver says, as it was closed through most of spring and fall. So he added propane-powered heat lamps to extend the glorious patio season by at least a couple months.
